Joey Tomsick
Keyboard, Squeezebox,
and Vocal
The youngest of five Tomsick brothers, Joey is
a musician - bandleader - composer, radio DJ, world traveler - and
all-around nice guy!
Joey's musical career began
at the age of ten with weekly accordion lessons under the guidance
of the late Frank Novak. He went on to study saxophone, tuba, keyboard,
and years later, Joey would actually begin teaching accordion, following
Frank's retirement.
During his years at Cleveland's St. Ignatius High
School, Joey was a four-year member of the marching band, jazz and
"pep" bands, and during his senior year, he was elected president
of the high school band. For several years, Joey was also the Director
of Cleveland's Circle 2 Button Box Club, and in 1983 he established
the "Euclid Squeezeboxers Button Box Club".
As an understudy of musicians Ted Hoyer, Lou Trebar,
and Dante Picciati, Joey was inspired to form his own band in 1984.
Within a short period of time, this group quickly became one of
Cleveland's most popular all-occasion bands, and began building
a loyal fan base. Into the '90's, the band toured several states,
Europe, the Hawaiian Islands, and appeared as guest artists on numerous
cruises including Carnival and Costa Cruise Lines.
In 1984, radio "Hall of Famer", Tony Petkovsek
invited Joey to begin co-broadcasting with him on weekend programming
and eventually expanded his radio time, where today he can be heard
regularly over WELW 1330am. Joey is an active member ofn the National
Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Penn-Ohio Polka Pals,
and a Trustee for the American Slovenian Polka Foundation and is
the editor of the organization's newsletter, "The Quarterly".
Honors have included performing with Roy Clark,
Bobby Vinton, Myron Floren, Frank Yankovic and performing for President
George Bush, Presidential Nominee Bob Dole, and U.S. Senator George
Voinovich. Four of Joey's original compositions were featured on
two Grammy Award Winning CD's of Canada's Walter Ostanek. In 1999
Joey's accomplishments reached an all-time high with awards presented
for 3 categories by the American Slovenian Polka Foundation - "Album
of the Year"- Smile, "Musician of the Year", and "Button Accordionist
